In Quiet Corners was born from a belief that design should be personal, intentional, and layered with meaning. I’m Ella Joan, a Melbourne-based designer exploring how to shape spaces that tell stories. Over the course of my career, I’ve worked closely with clients, discovering how people truly live, feel, and connect to their homes. I’ve always known that design isn’t just about the physical—it’s about why spaces feel the way they do, and that’s what drew me to this work. Every room has a story. I have always wished that walls could talk for the pleasure of hearing about the stories and lives that have unfolded within them. My focus is on bringing those stories to life for the people who inhabit them.

I believe in the quiet power of thoughtful spaces, in the poetry of well-placed objects, and in the joy of discovery that comes from a home curated for the people who live there. A home is a place to be unapologetically yourself, to express the parts of you the world may not see. In Quiet Corners celebrates these stories—the stories of objects, of spaces, and of the lives that grow among them—where design, writing, and art converge with care, intention, and a touch of wonder.

Each month, a new facet of the human experience is explored, unfolding through essays that consider the emotional and experiential layers of space. To compliment these reflections, an array of work from artists, makers, and storytellers accompanies the narrative—offering inspiration and expanding ideas. Design is not singular in its pursuit of storytelling; every medium provides its own way to shape mood and convey narrative.
